So about a week ago I got a sony vaio for school, only had 512 RAM, but got a good deal on it >.>
Last night I find it instead of having 1 512 stick, it has 2x256. So heres my general question
I want to upgrade it to atleast a gig(for light gaming, school, what have you) so when I thought it was just 1x512, was just gonna throw another 512 in the other slot, now that I know its not heres my question.
Would it be reasonable (or rather NOT mess up my computer) if I put in a 1gig stick, and then left 1 of the 256 sticks in, giving me like 1.25 gig, or would for some reason that mess stuff up.
Well I'll ask another question, having never changed RAM on a laptop before, is it basically the same as on a PC? Just switch the **** out, run BIOS?

As long as you use the same brand, speed, latency, etc. you will have a minimal chance of experiencing problems. Better yet, sell the 256x2 and just get the same brand of 1GB

I asked the same question here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=40466&page=2
No need to change BIOS settings in either system unless the new RAM allows a faster memory bus speed. -
You can change the RAM without a BIOS update, RAM is automatically detected. I would say upgrade to a 1GB stick and not worry about matching CAS or brand. You will find its easier that way and I doubt you will mis the 256Mb anyway. From what you say, I think 1GB is more than enough for you. Later on when you feel you need more you can just add another 1GB sitck.
I wouldnt sell your 256MB sticks in case you need to send the laptop for repair. You always need to send the laptop back with the componets it came with. -
Oh~~ don't forget to run a memory test, make sure the memory is good without any error. Doesn't matter different brand name as long as they can compariable between the both.
Simple question about upgrading RAM
