Hi everyone, does it hurt the laptop if I put it to sleep mode or shut down while charging it at the same time?

    No.
The charging circuitry is in the battery and charger themselves. Shutting it down or putting it to sleep will only make it charge faster (because the charger can only deliver a set amount of power).

You mean amount of peak power output :) Laptop power brick is like a computer powersupply, it only uses as much power as needed up to a certain maximum amount.

Er, of course it only uses as much power as needed. And yes, I meant that it has an upper limit to what it can deliver, which I hope was pretty clear in my previous post.

Yes, on my MB, it charges faster when it's sleeping because of nothing running, which means it can deliver the same amount of power to a machine that isn't using any of it on the spot, therefore making the charge time faster. ;)

[Edit: I think I misconstrued you, so I have removed part of the post]

It charges faster, because there's an upper limit to how much it can deliver. When up and running the amount of power the charger can deliver is divided between charging the battery and running the computer. When shutting it down, no power to run the computer is needed, and it can all go to the battery.

In fact, Apple laptops have a somewhat crappy power supply all things considered. They have to throttle down to half the cpu speed if there is no battery present, because the power supply can't give enough power alone.
The MBA - ver 1 (don't know about ver2) - had trouble charging at all while on. Some people reported 6 hours of charging, a little less when off, but still way longer than it took to deplete it.
