I'm working on a mini itx project here and I happen to have an extra laptop DVD drive around.
Since the Mini ITX case won't fit a full sized optical drive, I thought about getting one of these

Would this work with the extra laptop drive I have for inspiron 1520?

Google up the model for your spare drive and make sure it's not SATA.
Aren't there any non-powered boards around? -
So if he has one laying around, it's like 99% chance that it's not
And if it is a SATA, you don't need an adapter at all, just plug it in like any other optical/HDD SATA.
However, that adapter should work.
And what do you mean non-powered!? You have to get power to the device in order to make it work! You can't power it directly as it has that strange connection for the PATA-interface togheter with the power in one.
You need an adapter that looks like -
You need an mini ATAPI to IDE interface. I dont think their are any ATAPI to SATA converters out there, they use two completely differnent interfaces.
I know their are ATAPI to IDE converters, I have a few at home, which are pulls from working servers.

And SATA -> PATA/IDE isn't completely different, there is SATA->PATA adapters out there. Like the one in the middle. http://www.lanbitinc.com/images/SATA_Convert.jpg
However, the adapter he has linked to seems just like a ordinary PATA/IDE interface from a slimline CD/DVD that goes to desktop PATA/IDE. So i don't see why it won't work -
Michel, I only mentioned SATA because in mini-ITX solutions, a sata cable is preferred over an IDE cable.
I agreed he needs an atapi to IDE converter.
I was just mentioning that maybe he could look for an atapi to sata cable, so there are less wires in his case

This is what the interface on the drive looks like
... would this work with the adapter?
PATA or SATA doesn't really matter - The board only has 2 on board SATA adapters, so I probably will stick with IDE - I'm not using IDE for anything else.
Airflow isn't an issue really with this - it's just a low powered pc that's going to run server 03/08 or Linux for class projects.
As for power to the converter device, there is a connector on there to plug in a floppy drive power connector into it - which this case has.
also How can I tell how the interfaces line up - I dont want this thing sticking out of the side. -
Well, you're only confusing the whole thing now
You said he needed an ATAPI to IDE (IDE could be SATA or PATA) so, it looked like you said he needed a ATAPI to SATA-adapter as you mentioned SATA togheter with IDE.
And whatever, he just asked if the above adapter in his link worked, and that was the whole meaning with this thread as i seeAnyways, this is just getting more confusing.

Alright thanks. I'll go and order it.
