have the Compaq V2000 series Presario(V2405US)Laptop.

It came with a combo DVD Rom/CD RW.
I wanted to upgrade to a DVD Burner and found the NECModel ND 6650 which will fit
and work but I saw that Meritline has Slot loading style; I would much rather have.

Can some one tell me if this will fit /work with my laptop. I noticed the size are the same as my stock one. I don't care if the color matches on the front.

    The model in question are:

    http://www.meritline.com/pioneer-dv...rner-drive.html

Pioneer DVR-K05 Slim 8X Dual Layer DVD Drive (186-133), Support DVD+R and DVD-R DL Media, Slot Loading for Notebook, PC and MAC Laptops

    OR:

Panasonic UJ-845-B 8X Slim Laptop DVD-RW/DVD-RAM DL Drive(186-117) for Notebook ,PC and MAC Laptops, Slot Loading, Support DVD-RAM Media, Free DVD Software for PC(196-045)

It probrably will fit but it may look awkward, since the bezel won't go flush with the laptop.

pioneer is way better for me....I hate the panasonic drives (they are picky in media speeds). I would just keep the NEC drive for best fit and fastest/more dependable.

    Seconding the Pioneer drive.

If your laptop will take a standard drive, then it should work. Just be aware that you can't switch benzels.

My question is how often will you burn DVD's? And will it always be mobile?

If not, save up a bit more money and go with an external burner. If your laptop supports it(I'm not familiar with that model), get one with a firewire interface. Frankly, it'll allow you to avoid the fitment issues and you can still burn DVD's at home(and elsewhere if you get one that's not too bulky).

I just find that I don't have much reason to be burning DVD's everywhere I go...so an external burner would often be acceptable. Just a thought.

The cost for the drive is only $80 dollars.
I just ordered it and it should arrive tuesday

Please let us know about the fitment in V2000. Some snapshot would definitely help.

I will as soon as I have it installed.
Meritline said it will fit fine, the outer bezel of the slot load is same as the factory bezel.

Sounds good! If the burner works great, the color matches that of the v2000 I may get one myself!

Pssttt... do some benchmarks on it :p LMK how long it takes to burn a 4.7GB DVD-R image from dvd shrink ;) Oh also how long it takes to rip a DVD.

My only questions is... how long until HD-DVD burners come onto the market? Bwa#! They will end up being like $250 anyways.

    1. Sorry, No pics till Sunday, my digi is gone till then, unless I can borrow one from work tommrow.

    2. Easy/ simple install on the Compaq. One screw and then swap out the mounting plate on the back then reinsert and replace the screw.

    3. It does not sit flush and the face plate is a bit thinner and narrower then stock; but it looks pretty good and the black face plate is easily removeable and can be painted with plastick cote spray paint to match but I like the black slot, it looks like a docking port on the side, kind of ;)
Also, you can now lift the lappy from the disc side without having to worry about the stupid dvd cover that compaq used breaking; no flimsy moving cover that squeeks like the stock.

    4. It sound a bit clunky when it loads and unloads( kind of like the old CD changers). It is also a bit noiser then the stock when it first starts to spin only. This one has less vibrations then the stock when reading and its faster.

    5. I used dvd cloner to copy Willy Wonka-(the original one) and it took 19min. to copy and burn on a D5(non Dual layer-D9).
    (Compaq V2405-AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.8, 1.5 MB ram, 80 gig HDD@5400 rpm)

I copied the same movie on my home burner (no name brand from outpost) 16x dual layer dvd burner using a D5 disc and it took 32 minutes.

Go figure, my home computer is a lot faster then this Compaq lappy

(Dell Diemension: Pentium 4- 2.6gig, 1gig MB ram, 80gig HDD@7200); could be the program I used on the hm. computer( 1click dvd copy)

I will post pics as soon as I can.
I know its way too early but, overall, I am pleased and glad I made the switch.

    Hum :/

Yeah painting will work. But krylon fusion paint and all that fancy crap still chips and fades away one heck of a lot faster :/

Specs arent half bad, but I think that I would wait for one that created more of a stock look :/

Maybe I'll get the one compaq sells, but t newegg for a few bucks cheaper.

Hey, it is nice to know finally you installed it. About the paint, it should not be problem, as it sits flush we would not touch it much.

Now, photos please.., please it is monday...

Bottom line, it's not stock but it fucntions well and I am glad I got the Pioneer.
My friend said you can find the slot covers like this anywhere, especially at swap meats where they sell cheap drives and computers; he said it is fairly common piece.

I looked at the ones on the Qusimo(sp?) and they have no covers it is a slit built in and it looks much better but for an aftermarket piece it suites me fine,I am more for the function then look.

    Hum not bad, but meh.

I guess the only thing you could do would be to mod your old drive by sanding off the back and glueing/taping it onto the bezel of your slot loader. But you would then need to cut a slit down the middle for the disk. And IMO there is a bigger chance of ****in up the chut and making it look even more ghetto.

Slot loading players are better IMO. But I think I'd rathe get a tray NEC player or some other model. But there arent that many silver slim drives around :/

Hey, Thanks for posting the pics.

I wish those were high-res pics. Even at the link you gave it only showed small pics. Actually you can attach photos instead of including in post.

Under post you have attachment option, that way we can click on thumb nail and get big size.

I am also leaning towards slot loading drive. I have tray drives esp in laptops, where you have to press the into hub and not sure when we are gonna break the tray.

It looks good, but if you have time please attach the photos.

    Thanks
    Chinna

I just bought this drive today.

The drive is recessed a little, like a quarter inch or so.

The drive has NO screw mounts. So count on the ATA cable holding it in.

The front bezel came off when I first touched it. The bezel is in place by tiny hooks.

The stock tray drive I had felt a little more solid.

All in all it works. But I don’t like the idea that there are no screw mounts on the drive and that it feels flimsy. The fact that it looks off by not being flush is odd. But it isn’t so bad.

I think I'll try and attach a piece of sheet metal and make my own hook bracket.

You are supposed to remove the bracket from stock DVD Drive and install on this slot drive. Almost all DVD drives have those holes for that bracket( though bracket is specific to this laptop). Do not leave it running without installing the original bracket, not a good idea.

Not a bad idea. Ask him to mail the bracket if it is not useful to him. Otherwise, may be you can make one with small aluminium strip( may not be as strong as original, but better than none)

Goto a PC recycle shop and they should have brackets.
If you cant find one, I will pick one up next time I am at one.
Most shops that sell used computer parts will have them for a $1 or $2.

I have an Alienware 766, my QSI DVDRW drive is toast.

i need a replacement, but id prefer slot load, even for the hike in price. anyone know any units that will fit this unit with a black face place?

all slimline laptop cd drives are the same right? just a matter of finding brand and options you like?

    thanks in advance

Now all drives fit in all laptops. But my guess would be that sager/alienware use the standard slim line drive. But just to be sure I would take a picture of your drive and post it here to verify it.
