I had pretty much settled on getting a Sager NP5797 so I headed over to best buy to look at displays and decide if I wanted a) 1920 x 1200 or 1680 x 1050 and b) do I want glossy or matte. I came away wondering how many laptops have backlit leds, and if ANY pc notebook can match the display of the Macbook Pro? I put a windows vista VM up on the Macbook, then compared it to every other laptop in the store, including Sony, Toshiba, HP and Dell. The Mac blew them all away. It's unfortunate that I can't spec a Mac out with a P9500 CPU and a 9800GTX GPU (and while I'm wishing, keep it around $2.5k). I would consider doing that and running Bootcamp. As it is, I'm wondering if anyone knows of any notebooks that can match the Mac's display? Is it the white led that gives it that great white to black contrast, or is there more to it?

I personally never thought that the mac displays were the best. They are nice, but in my opinion not the best. Not sure what kind of screen you are looking for, glossy or matte. I like my matte Thinkpad display. For glossy the Asus and Sony screens looked the best to me, poping displays and really nice colors from a layman's perspective(i.e. me, not a photographer)

i don't like the mac displays at all. i prefer the hp 2710p display over most of what i've seen (the 2730p should be even better) and even chose the asus eee 900 display before any apple display..
i don't like shiny.. -
The best screen I've seen was on the Asus G50, with my 2096 a close second. I don't know about other Sagers, but the 2096 screen is just beautiful.

This would be more informative if you knew the make/model of the screens.
You could be commenting on the same screen manufacturer or perhaps the use of one vs. two ccfl's. -
Macbook Pro has excellent contrast. You can find detailed measurements on sites like Notebookcheck.net and Notebookjournal.de.

The Macbook Pro has a nice display. It is above the conventional laptop considering its price is also above them so hopefully you'd be getting better stuff.
Other laptops which cost quite a bit also have nice screens such as the Sony Vaios(the double lit lamp full HD displays).
HP, Dell and the others have pretty generic screens since they target the average consumer. -
my asus screen is manufactured by samsung
it looks wicked, and im incredibly picky.
So I went to BestBuy today...
