you cant use an IB cpu on a SB notebook -
Just to add to ^, it is because the sockets are different. While some CPUs are not directly soldered onto the MB, the sockets are. You can pull out a CPU from its socket and put in a new one but you cannot remove the socket itself. If the socket does not support IVB, you are stuck.

Right. Same socket. Sandy will work in Ivy but not the reverse.

IIRC Sandy Bridge mobile chipsets are not forward compatible with Ivy Bridge but desktop ones are.
So can I put an Ivy bridge processor on a Sandy Bridge Laptop?
