Okay, I finally switched my HD's and am using the Hitachi 7K500 in my VAIO now.

While doing this, I had the chance to do an identical clean install on an identical VAIO except with the stock HD (Toshiba) and 4GB instead of 8GB RAM.

This post is to keep track of all the threads where I'm discussing various comparisions between the 8GB vs. 4GB system and the Hitachi vs. Toshiba HD's.

I also tested defraggler vs. Perfectdisk (as I promised davepermen I would).

So, how is the new 7K500? Its a keeper. ;)

I won't be able to directly compare these two systems anymore (the installs will diverge drastically after today), but I may have some info in my notes that may help me to clarify any points of confusion. So, if you have questions, ask away.

I went to a 128GB primary partiton for the OS and am not using the unused space at all right now. Using HDTune it shows the 1st 25% or 128GB to have 100MB/s read. In this way the used partiton has 100MB/s minimum read and it will reduce the average seek time if the end of the drive ever gets used.

With this I have 100GB still free of the original 128GB too. If I ever need more space it will be very easy to expand as well. For right now this works best for me in a shortstroke configuration with this drive...........
