So which is better at gaming ?

    the Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Processor | clock speed : 1.60 / 2.80 Turbo GHz | Front Side Bus : 1333 MHz | 2nd level cache : 6 MB
    -or-
    the Intel® Core™ i7-620M Processor | clock speed : 2.66 / 3.33 Turbo GHz | Front Side Bus : 1066 MHz | 2nd level cache : 4 MB

(The graphics card and the Ram are the same in both models i.e. RAM - 6 GB & Graphics Card - NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M with CUDA™ technology)

    Thanks

Depending on how much CPU utilization there will be per specific game.
GTA 4 for example would run much better on the 720 because the game uses all 4 cores.
In SC2 for example, the 620M would be better because the game won't use more than 2 cores.

More or less though, general performance will be negligible due to the same gpu (unless we take into account the cpu power of course for specific games).

I'd personally get the 720QM due to the 4 cores.
However, if you can hold off a bit, wait until Sandy Bridge is released (it will feature higher core frequencies than what the current generation has).

Not to be a pain, but seriously this is probably the third or fourth thread about 720 vs 620. How about using the search function?

For most games, the 620m will be faster.

personally i would get the quad or whichever one is cheaper because both are excellent for gaming but the i7-720qm is more future proof so my choice is i7-720qm..

It stands to reason that the more power the better. So the Quad i7-720QM would fit the bill better.

    Appreciate the reply Deks.
Unfortunately need to get the laptop as soon as possible.
Am looking forward to play SC2 and what i have read is u will hardly know the difference in play between the 2 processors.
What about World of Warcraft , Neverwinter Nights 2, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age 2, SW: Old Republic ? Would they be better on the 2 core or the 4 core ?

    Guys, Appreciate the comments.

Below are the two laptops I'm intending to buy and found the i7-720QM cheaper than the i7-620M by $200.

    Option 01 :
    Satellite A660-10W - Product Specifications - Toshiba

    Option 02 :
    Qosmio F60-11F - Product Specifications - Toshiba

The rest of the specs are exactly identical

    What say you ? Option 01 / Option 02 ?

If you're worried about gaming, you can probably find a notebook with 720QM and something better than a GT330m.

    No doubt, i7-720.

Most of the discussions and comparisons were done assuming both these processors were similarly priced (in previous threads;in which case, I'd go for i7-620 because lower temps and slightly better battery life, and slightly improved performance in the applications I run, certainly helps. ;) ..
TBH, other than the increased heat and power consumption, I am really happy with my i7-720 QM's performance, and the former, is because of lack of proper cooling system,I'd say)

    For 99% of games, i7-620M. For GTA 4, 720QM.

first of all, hyori lee is one of my all time favorites. ;)

i was wondering how the i7 620m and i7 720qm compared to the i7 840qm in terms of performance. the i7 940xm is a $905 upgrade that i can't really justify, so i figured i would "settle" with the i7 840qm for my sager NP8850 build.

p.s. - what i got from reading was that the only reason the 620m is "better" in gaming than the 720qm is not because of the card itself, but because most games can't fully utilize the 720qm's 3rd and 4th core yet, correct?

I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet, but the GPU on those laptops will most likely bottleneck any game before any of the CPUs do.
