Im switching to SSD as my main drive in my 1557 (still hasnt got here apparently neweggs shipping sucks now  )

    So I bought this Newegg.com - AMS DS-2188NEU3 Aluminum 2.5" Black USB 3.0 External Enclosure w/ ExpressCard/34 (2-port) bundle

For the current WD Scorpio Black 250 drive to go in works great too.

    OK my question are.

I have a old Seagate 200gb usb 2.0 external enclosure with IDE internal interface.I would like to buy a usb 3.0 external enclosure with a IDE internal interface to replace the old usb 2.0 enclosure....is there such a beast? I cant find one.

Lastly if I did find one would I have to format the drive before connecting it via usb 3.0.In other words would it just read my files like normal without a format.

I guess it really come down to finding one first.

well I really doubt that IDE can handle even half the speed of USB 3.0, so even if you find an enclosure, it'll still be slow because of the IDE. Even if you have a SATA hard drive, don't expect a huge speed increase because USB 3.0 can handle a lot more speed than a SATA hard drive will allow. That's probably why IDE USB 3.0 enclosures don't exist.

As for your second question, no you don't have to format it but I would do it anyway to get rid of all that Windows stuff

As long as it wasn't originally a boot drive, or the files weren't stored in your user directories, it should be fine. If it was, you may need to take ownership of the files first before being able to access them.
