Some HP PCs are recording your keystrokes - Pcworld.com
"You can also find a complete list of affected HP PC models in the company's security advisory. Affected models include PCs from the HP Elitebook 800 series, HP ProBook 600 and 400 series', the EliteBook Folio G1, and others. The program has existed on HP PCs since at least late 2015, Modzero says."

And this is why I wipe computers as soon as I get them.

A clean install with Win10x64Pro is what I do if the system passes a 24-48 hour burn in session 'as delivered'.
With physically removing the HDD/SSD or, if that is not possible; wiping all existing partitions from it and then doing a clean install.
Bloatware is bad enough; but this is at the ridiculous level...

There is more to it this time, it's in some audio driver version from conexant according to ArsTechnica: https://arstechnica.com/security/2017/05/hp-laptops-covert-log-every-keystroke-researchers-warn/. If you reinstall an audio driver version that had it, it doesn't matter if you wipe the machine or not. It doesn't appear to be for the purpose of logging keystrokes. It looks like it is just bad, shoddy and inexcusable software. The risk it poses is quite real though.Starlight5, hmscott and Papusan like this.

I don't think that would help, the problem is with the audio drivers, and you'd download those from HP to install on your "clean" Windows install.
@Papusan I was hoping someone other than us - @Phoenix would have posted this, the rest of the "team" needs to step up and start posting interesting stuff, rather than the 3 of us all the time, sometimes at the same time

I don't use the OEM drivers for any devices, I always go to the device manufacturer and grab the latest driver from there. OEM drivers always tend to be behind anyway.triturbo, Starlight5 and hmscott like this.

Starlight5 Yes, I'm a cat. What else is there to say, really?
I personally use default Windows audio driver on all machines - it works way better than proprietary ****, and allows different volume levels for headphones and speakers.

Nah, I was just about to post it too, I've been seeing it for a few days already, I was just hoping someone else would take the opportunity to post it

HP rolls out patch to stop keylogging bug in some laptops-Pcworld.com
"Consumers can download the patch from HP’s support page, by looking up their laptop’s name and downloading a new audio driver. They should also receive the fix in an update coming through Windows Update, Nash said."hmscott likes this.
