Well, I'm on my way out the door to work and might have to edit this a little later, but here goes for a first attempt: i'm on the verge of purchasing a new gaming notebook, the brand isn't as important as the hardware supporting it. I know from personal experience that Vista isn't so great for games, and with xp on a brand new system current games can be played brilliantly. However, the question comes down to this: if i purchase say an alienware or sager with two go 7950 gtx cards, will they last long enough to be worth the multiple thousands invested in the system, or should i prep for the future with an 8800 setup and vista?
If i invest in an 8800 sli setup will it perform in vista as well as the 7950 sli does in xp(all other factors equal)?
or, by the time games are "required" to support directx10 to even be playable will one have to replace the computer anyway?
also, i'm no computer guru by a longshot, but from what i've read the 7950 is not directx 10 compatible, if that is the case how can you order an alienware system with said cards and vista? any help/advice is huuuugely appreciated.

Single 8800m GTX > SLI Go 7950 GTX (slightly >) Single 8800m GTS.

for example: my brother's rig is 3ghz dual core cpu, 3gm ddr2 ram, dual 8800 gtx sli running on xp and everything, i mean absolutely everything he plays on that beast is flawless, fear, bioshock, crysis, the witcher, and i'm sure other's he's been spending money on. granted, its a desktop, and i'm not looking to match that kind of power, but to come close at least. -
Gaming wise, XP (about 1-5 FPS >) Vista.
