I just got myself a Dell XPS 1645. The problem I have is that the included DVD burner (CA10N) cant burn cds and dvds only at 0.3x under linux. So I have been eyeballing the Sony BC-5600S Blue ray drive and would like to know if somebody has this drive working (reading and burning) under linux.
Thanks in advance for any input.

How are you writing? Does the drive info report that it should burn faster? I have the drive, and Linux, but I only have it in a USB enclosure. I'll test it later.

Been writing with k3b and from CLI with wodim. And yes the drive reports write speed of 8x but writes at 0.3x (very very slow). I am not the only one with this issue, hence i know its a hardware problem. Apparently it used to work before they updated the firmware for win7 support, ironic. Anyhow the only drive i can find that fits is the sony, but i have not found anybody who used it or had issues with it in linux.

    Update:
Tried burning in single user mode with same results (this should work)
inserting blanc disk results in many error messages in dmesg:

    repeated many times.

    Update
Replaced drive with Sony BC-5600S and i can write normally now. Seems like the CA10N with Firmware a102 is not linux friendly.
