I just ordered a Sony FE notebook.

It is an Intel dual core notebook with a front side bus speed of 667MHz. It ships with PC2-4200 DDR2, 533MHz memory.

With the bus speed would there be a substantial performance advantage to go with DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 667MHz?

    Thanks!

No there would not be a substantial increase in going with the faster RAM. It is much more benefitial to up the amount of RAM you have, 1GB is on average the "perfect" amount, unless you are a serious gamer, then opt for 2GB. That would be much faster then going with the faster RAM.

Thanks. I was planning to get 2, 1GB sticks. Memory seems pretty affordible.

Any other opinions on using PC2-5300?

    Thanks!

I totally agree with Jenson. The more RAM is better than faster RAM. I use PC-4200 533Mhz and it is plenty fast, but I upgraded to 2GB because I am alot. Stick with 2GB and get the cheaper PC-4200 RAM :)

Thanks for the responses. This makes sense.

One unique factor for the FE590 is that its discrete graphics chip, the GeForce Go 7400 shares the notebook's main memory.

I read this article at Tom's hardware which suggests that if main memory will be shared, 667MHz memory may show a performance advantage. It does also say if not, then probably not.

That's a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. It has it's own dedicated RAM but also uses TurboCache, the same kind of thing ATI that they call Hypermemory, such as the x1300 and x1400 and older 200m. It will use some of the system memory as needed. These video cards are better than plain old integrated graphics solutions such as the GMA900 by leaps and bounds but are still a far cry behind dedicated cards. But for light gaming, it is an ideal item.
