sp/dif is a digital output connector for 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound. It comes in a copper wire version (using the familiar RCA-style connector) and an optical/laser version that uses fiber-optic cable. Sony often uses the term TOSLINK for their sp/dif connections.
On the image you posted, the fiber optic sp/dif TOSLINK connectors are the square-ish black and red connectors. The sp/dif input connector is the black one.
Other than some of the Sager and Clevo laptops, there are not too many portable machines with this kind of sound support and output capabilities.
It's one thing to have a load of software that purports to support 5.1/7.1. It's quite another to have a decoder/encoder chip **and** the correct connector on your laptop.
It is possible to pull sp/dif audio from an HDMI connector but it takes a specialized (read: usually expensive) adapter to do so.
What I and a few other people to is add a USB sound adapter to our machines to get surround sound and sp/dif output capabilities.
My fave adapters (and the faves of a lot of people on the avsforum web site) come from TurtleBeach. I have a pair of their AudioAdvantage Micro adapters. Cost around $35 each.
You'll need an optical sp/dif cable as well. Mail order these run about $10- and less. At places like Best Buy, expect to spend $40 and up.
Sony FZ190 and S/PDIF?
