I am opting to buy the Sony FZ290 (Vista home premium) with 1 GB DDR-SDRAM (DDR2-667, 512 MBx2) because there is no added cost. Then I'm going over to newegg to buy memory.

So before I buy either one, am I understanding correctly that Vista only utilizes up to 3 gigs of memory and it will be a waste of money to get a 4gig stick?

    Thanks in advance!

No, 32bit OSes only see up to like 3.2GBs of ram. That includes both Vista and XP. But both of those come in 64bit flavors also, so if you want to use 4gbs then make sure you get the 64bit version of Vista.

Yes it will work. But double check in the Sony forum as I believe some models were limited to running the ram at max speed of 533 (pc4200). Either way, that ram will work just fine. Either it will run at the correct speed, or be downclocked to 533MHz by Sony's limit.
