I have a Sony PCG-TR3A that I had to open to replace the heatsink/fan assembly. While I had it open, I was wondering if I could upgrade the hard drive since the original was only 40Gig, which is quite small by today's standards. Does somebody make one that would work, say at least 80Gig, in my notebook? What would I have to do to get it working if I did install it? Could I just use my recovery disks to install the OS on it?

of course. upgrading and replacing a hard drive is quite possible and in many cases user serviceable. to order a hard disk make sure which kind of port you have on your hard disk (PATA or SATA). then choose the speed and capacity according to needs. u will have to format, partition the hard drive and reinstall OS in it. recovery disks may not be useful till u partition the drive

What is the make / model number of the existing HDD? This will make it easier to suggest alternatives.
Subject to alternatives being available then the upgrade should be possible. Older BIOSes have an addressing limit of 137GB, but you aren't planning to go that big.
