    Hello All,

I want to know if it is at all possible to replace my processor and motherboard on my Sony V505DXP.

Right now it has a 1.4ghz Pentium M. Ideally I'd like to put a Core Duo in it. That would require a motherboard upgrade, I think. If anything I at least want to put an 1.86ghz Pentium M, but again I don't know if I'll need to swap the motherboard. I don't even know if I CAN swap the motherboard.

If anyone can point me to some resources or has done this before, I'd greatly appreciate the help. I really like my V505 and I can't afford to drop another 2 grand on a laptop (although the Macbook Air is looking pretty sweet).

    Thanks,
    Troy

You are not going to be able to modify the laptop as much as you are planning. You are right that a new motherboard would be required for a Core Duo, but you cannot just get some motherboard off eBay. You would have to find one that was designed for your laptop, your chassis, etc.

A 1.4GHz P-M is part of the older generation of Pentium Ms as well. Read this ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=209284) to see if it would be upgradeable. It might only be able to go up to 1.7GHz.

    Thanks Greg!

I see I won't be able to go Duo, but I was wondering:

It seems like I have a Pentium M 1.4 1400 Banias core with a 855 400mhz FSB chipset. Is it possible to upgrade the CPU to anyone of the Dothan cores, as long as the FSB is 400mhz?

It may be possible but only if Sony released a BIOS upgrade for that machine allowing Dothan Pentium-Ms.
