I think the max upgrade for VGN-NR110E with mobo GM965 chip set is:
The intel T7700 is 2.4 Ghz 800FSB, intel T7100 1.8 Ghz 800 FSB, intel T2310 1.4 Ghz 533 FSB
Max Processor socket P Intell T7700
******************************************************
The 6400 ram is 800Mhz, the 5200 ram is 667Mhz, and the 4200 is 533Mhz.
Max Ram 2x2GB DDR2 PC2 6400
******************************************************
Hard Drive 500G, 350G, 250G 200G 120G @ 7200 rpm or 500G, 350G, 250G, 200G 120G @ 5200 rpm
Max Hard Drive 500G @ 7200 rpm
*******************************************************
From the information I have gathered this Max upgrade should turn the Sony VGN-NR110E into the Sony VAIO VGN-SZ691N/X.
If I am wrong please let me know?
With this build one should have a 2.4 ghz processor with 4G ram running with 800 FSB under a 64 bit OS.
There has been other people that has upgraded this laptop but only had 667 FSB using DDR2 667 PC2 5400 ram with intel T7100 800 FSB. The ram limited the laptop to 667 FSB.
Remember only 64 bit OS can use more than 3G of memory.

theres no point i getting PC6400 memory as it will downclock to 667mhz due to the limitations of the 965 chipset. the T7700 will also run hot in your system. if you have te support for it id get a T9300. it should give good performance at far cooler temeratures. as far as i know it is spported as i have an NR21z/s, im not sure of the us equvalent model and it has a T8100 on the same chipset and as far as i know will support the T9300
oh and for the hard drive look at the Hitachi 7k500 its reliable and the fastest notebook mechanical drive out thee -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
A lot of this depends on Sony's BIOS support, but the 965 chipset itself is supposed to be able to take up to a T9500 and 8GB. A lot of manufacturers seem to let their machines take the T9500, but not the full 8GB. A lot of Dell 965 machines, while officially only supporting 4GB, can take 6GB and rarely 8GB.
So it's kind of a crapshot. The specs that OP mentioned are probably the highest with which the laptop originally shipped rather than the "true" max specs. -
it would take T9300,T9500 but T9300 is usually way cheaper and is only 0.1GHz slower than T9500...
for RAM ,it will take 4GB but 8GB might be a problem... also , depending on price , PC2-6400 might be cheaper or more expensive than PC2-5300...
for Hard drive , u can take any 2.5 inch 9.5mm SATA drive.. Best one is 500GB Hitachi 7K500... -
Thanks for the reply. I did not know that the T9300 and T9500 would work. That was why I was only looking at the T7700 and not higher was due to the heat problems. The T9300 sounds like the winner. There is not much difference in the T9300 vs T9500 in performance unless you use the processor in intensive programs. The price is cheaper for the T9300 than the T9500.
Has any one else heard of these GM965 chip set running 6G to 8G of memory?
Is there not a relationship between the processor and memory limits? -
i've heard of it running 6GB but 8GB might be a problem...

I now have 4 Gb memory DDR 2 5300 Corsair. My bios reads 4Gb but my OS Windows 7 64 bit does not boot up in windows. It locks up during the Windows logo with blue screen then re-boots to windows repair or start normaly. I still have the CPU Intel T2310.
Question, this processor Intel T2310 has a limit for memory?
Do I need to flash the bios for Windows 7 to work?
Thanks for your help. -
Did some of you guys talk about this topic in this thread here?
http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...vaio-vgn-nr110e-s-ram-upgrade-question-2.html
Also try reseating the ram again. -
Yes they did with 32 bit OS. Windows 32 bit can only see 3Gb of ram. I am using 64 bit OS. This will allow me to use 4Gb or 6Gb of memory.
I just did not know if the problem is in the installation of Windows 7 64 bit with 2Gb of ram. After installation of OS then install the next 2Gb of ram for 4Gb of ram total. This is where I am now. Every time I install the extra ram my computer shows the blue screen and is stuck in rebooting the computer to blue screen then repeat.
I am not sure if my problem is the T2310 CPU? Is there a ram limit caused by the CPU. If I purchase the upgrade CPU will this solve my ram problem?
I was trying to shed some light on the bottle neck of this problem. I have flashed the mobo, installed a 7200 rpm hard drive, and 4GB ram. I have not purchased the faster CPU, so i am still using the T2310 processor. -
Are all 4gb of ram same type / clock and from same manufacturer? How much ram is recognized if you go inti bios setup?
-
The ram is Corsair value select VS2GSDS667D2 DDR2 2x2Gb 5300. The ram was not purchased at the same time, but all the information above is the same for both 2Gb ram.
Yes the bios does see the ram. -
as far as i know the T2310 doesnt support 64 bit instructions so im guessing that the reaso why you cant get i to boot with 4gb on the 64 bit os have you tried 3gb. im suprised you hd it running in 64 bit in the first place
-
Yes I am running Windows 64 bit under 2Gb of ram just fine. I have been trying to upgrade this computer piece by piece. The last piece for the final upgrade is the CPU. I think we are on the same track, the Intel T2310 CPU causing the limitation with the ram.
-
Yes all 4Gb of ram is Corsair VS2GSDS667D2 5300. The bios does recognize all 4Gb of ram.
-
so CPU is problem... go and get a 64bit CPU like from T7000 series.
-
or if the mobo is the same as mine a T8000 or T9000 series like me cos they run cooler my T8100 idles below 30 degrees despite the fact is shares its cooling with the gpu which idles at 60

I now have a Intel T8300 installed in my Sony VGN-NR110e.
Final upgrade now working is:
CPU Intel T8300
OS Windows 7 (64 bit)
HD 200G 7200rpm
Ram Installed 2G on one port (extra 2G not working)
At first i thought I had a problem with the old CPU Intel T2310 restricting the ram to under 4G. Now with the new CPU Intel T8300 I still can not install the 2x2G of ram. The Bios shows 4G but it will not boot up in Windows 7 64 bit. Since other people were able to run 4G or more.
My VGN NR-110e Bios is R0130J9.
What version of Bios are you currently running that can use 4G or more of ram? Where can I find it?
Has anyone used another mobo bios like the VGN-NR160 Bios drivers that use the GM965 mobo as an Bios upgrade?
Last question, for the people who can use 4G of ram or more did you install your OS with all ram installed first, or did you add the ram later?
Thinking about OS or Bios is the bottle neck with this problem?
Thanks for your info. -
Shep,
I have a Sony VGX-NR260E. I tried the 2GB sticks from my Sony VGN-CR490 in the NR and it would not boot up with either stick installed. They were G Skill PC2 5300 2GB sticks. Did you ever have any luck with your memory upgrade on the NR110? -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
The CPU was never the issue here, Win7x64 would have never installed on a cpu without x64 support (and the T2310 does have that).
Either the specific RAM modules are not compatible, the second RAM slot is not working, or, the RAM must be exactly identical for this particular system.
Curious if ShepW will update us in any way? -
I looked up the NR260E motherboard chipset on the Intel web site and it states that it is limited to 2GB total ram in 2x1GB sticks. Chipset: Mobile Intel® GL960 Express Chipset.
