I've run out of space and need to upgrade. Have removed all the screws indicated from bottom of machine, taken out keyboard but still can't find a way of opening it up. There must be a way without dropping it and Sony (as usual) won't help. Any assistance would be much appreciated as it's quite a nice machine. Thanks in advance. Geoff

I did the same multiple times with my a397xp - used this link; I hope all the info is still here.
Be sure to unscrew the 2 screws under the keyboard and to unplug the two cables connected to the upper part of the notebook!

Your system uses standard 2.5" sata 9.5mm thick drives. If you like you can upgrade your current drive to the new 500gb 5400rpm drive from western digital, or you can upgrade to a slightly faster 320gb 7200rpm drive from Hitachi, WD, Seagate or Fujitsu.

The harddrive is usually located on the side of the laptop. It is usually mounted in a caddy which can be removed by sliding a panel out from the base/side of the laptop.
