Hi, just wondering if say I purchase a Sony Vaio FE with a T2300 Core Duo CPU, and later down the track I might feel like adding a T2600 Core Duo in place of the T2300. Would this be possible?

Also, is it possible to overclock a T2300 to T2400 speed?

Upgrading the hard drive or adding more memory will give you a bigger performance boost without voiding your warranty.

Not sure about the overclocking, but I would be very careful with doing that in a laptop.

Why would you want to upgrade the CPU? The T2300 is a very strong processor.

The FE series also includes the T2400, for a much higher price, but for only like an extra ~200 mhz. So was wondering if clocking would cause any heat issues, considering its the same notebook model, but with different processor speed.

Im hoping that this laptop will last for around 4 years. The T2300 is the lowest Core Duo model, which kinda worries me that it wont be able to handle basic net surfing, office, vista, dvd's, light gaming, etc.

Oh the T2300 will be able to handle the basic stuff, more often the bottlenecks are in the RAM, GPU or hard drive as previous people have mentioned.

Although it would not be a bad idea to get the lowest CPU and upgrade it in the future if you felt like it, but it would probably void the warranty as Sony doesn't really like people popping open the laptops to swap parts out. Although I think if you change it back before sending it in, that might work or so I've read others do.

As for overclocking thats near impossible on a laptop, you may be able to overclock the GPU some but the CPU, basically impossible.

Depending on how knowledgable or how much risk you are willing to take, may be able to buy the T2300 model and upgrade different parts in the future. If don't want to risk it, then just go with the T2400 model or so.
