I have a Sony VAIO VGN-NR485E/S ( http://b2b.sony.com/Solutions/product-detail.do?prodId=SEL-M-70864&catId=SEL-yf-dnser-46296) This model came with a 200GB hard drive. My hard drive is almost full so I would like to replace it with a new 500GB drive. I would like to know if someone had tried this before on this model or theres an online guide on how to do it.

Your laptop uses standard 9.5mm thick 2.5" SATA harddrives
If you are looking to go to 500GB, I recommend the WD5000BEVT, it is regarded as the best 500gb 5400rpm drive.
You may also want to check out the Hitachi 5K500.B, but its hard to find.
The Seagate 500gb 7200rpm drive would be a faster upgrade, but it has only just been released, and hasnt really proved its reliability yet
Newegg, Zipzoomfly, and Tiger Direct are good places to buy laptop harddrives.

My main issue is how to open the case to exchange the drives.

It is usualy a little lid with 2 to 4 screws on the back of the laptop where the hdd sits, very simple to change.
Turn over your notebook and check for a lid where the hdd may be, one of those is usual for the ram modules and the other for HDD. Just open and check, easiest to doYou know how a hdd looks like i guess!
