My Sony Vaio Laptops fan has stopped running and cooling the Pent. chip. When laptop gets hot it therefore shuts down. I don't want to put a lot of $$ in this unit. What are chances that the fan is bad or motherboard is bad? I can get a fan cheap but won't want to spend $$ for motherboard. Any other fixes out there?? Thanks

If the notebook is still working normally before it shutdowns, then there is a good chance of a FAN failure. But finding the exact FAN or the cooling assembly could be a problem for such an old notebook. Maybe the fan is tuck for some reason ??? did you try to clean it ?

Fan is not dirty or stuck. I can spin it by blowing compressed air in vent holes. Used fan is available from a junked laptop of same kind.
