my Vaio is almost out of warantee and so would like to upgrade the cpu from the 1.73 533 to a 2.0 400 cpu

This would allow me to overclock it past 400 fsb

I phoned Sony asking whether the bios would accept a faster cpu but they gave me the usual spiel about not giving out that info blah blah

    Anyone know?

The chipset supports 400MHz P-M's. So, It should work unless there is a wierd Sony BIOS limitation.

If your current cpu is 533 front side bus, it should work with 2.0 533. Before do it, you have to update the BIOS if your model already come out a lastest version.

i know this is a kind of late.

    i repleaced my m740 with a m725 (1.6ghz 100/400fsb) by doing the wire mod/trick

    after the mod the m725 was @ 2.13ghz 133/533fsb.

    i p/u the cpu for 53.00 plus a few buck s/h.

i haven't done the voltage mod yet as system seems to be pretty stable under prime95.
