Does anyone know whether I can upgrade this laptop to 4GB RAM or can I use one 2GB stick. It has a 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 dual-core processor and it comes with 1 GB of installed RAM.

    Thanks

it says 2 gigs max, but im currently running 2.5gigs. So im pretty damn sure it can handle "4 gigs".

Seriously? You're running 2560MB RAM (2GB + 512MB)? (I guess it's interesting to note that the VGN-NR160 has a maximum of 4GB RAM as seen in this review, maybe the 110 is equipped with the same mobo?)

    If you go to:
    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=VGNNR110E#
and click on "Marketing Specs for VGN-NR110E/S" it'll open a PDF file which says there are 2x512MB PC2-4200 RAM upgradable to 2GB MAX.

How can I find out the manufacturer and model of the mobo inside? Can I really use more than 2GB of RAM? Is PC-4200/533MHz the maximum speed the mobo can read?

EDIT: I just ran the memory test on the front page at Crucial and it says my laptop can only take up to 2GB memory, but it states I can use PC2-5300, should I trust it? And the little asterik claims each dimm slot can handle a max of 1GB.

okay, here is what i have gathered. There are 3 different intel chipsets the PM965, GM965 (which VGN-NR160E have), GL960 (which VGN-NR110E). The budget laptops usually have the GL960 and Dual-Core processor, which on many sites say its max is 2GB of ram.

Well, when i used cpu-z, it stated that the VGN-NR110E have the GM965 chipset, but Lavalys Everest says it is the GL960, supported FSB533, FSB667,FSB800 and max 2GB. Taking the chance, i bought 2GB ram for about $40 MIR and installed it. Upon taking out the extra 512MB ram that was installed, the sticker said it was a pc2-5300 (DDR2-667). So, when i installed the ram it showed up 2.5GB and running at DDR2-533 because it was limited to the dual-core processor of FSB533.

Later i bought an intel core2duo t7100 which has a FSB800 and installed it. Now the ram now runs at DDR2-667. So, im not sure if its a marketing scheme or Sony, but either ways im happy that ive only spent about $520 (before tax) for a Sony Core2Duo 1.8 GHZ, 2.5GB ram.

Thats interesting, because you don't need a 3rd party app to realize that the chipset was 965, it says it in the Welcome Center! Of course I never knew the limitations of various chipsets.

I plan on picking up 2x2GB RAM in the future.

Hi Guys, I registered just so I could weigh in on this discussion, or pick your brains. I was researching upgrading my new nr110e vaio memory and saw that you put more than 2 g in yours. When you say you got another one was that just a processor or was that actually another computer.....adn could you tell me whatyou would do. I ordered 2g from crucial.com for about $55 (2 1G CARDS) BUT YOU guys made me wonder if that was the right thing to do....
Given this laptop nr110e.....which i have 500 in, what would you do.....? and is there a better deal on a laptop that has the faster processor.....

From what I learned, the limitation of memory is based of the motherboard chipset. CPUs are coupled to work for certain chipsets, with some leeway in between.

The motherboard for the NR110E is supposed to have the "inferior" chipset which limits you to 2GB RAM. However, cluelessfool has determined that the mobo actually has the 965, which faster CPUs use, and has a 4GB RAM limitation.

The NR110E comes with 1GB RAM, I'd suggest upgrading to 2GB if you want to keep using Vista. Anything past 2GB is useful for gaming, image editing, etc.

Note: I haven't upgraded my RAM yet, looking for a good deal.

Hey guys i just bought this exact laptop and jeez is it ever slow! Based on what I've read in other forums it seems that it could be either the speed of the hard drive (5400 rpm), Vista (Naturally) and the ram!

If in fact it can run 2.5 gig of ram then what type of 2 gig stick should i be looking for, just like everyone else i want to get the right one for lowest price!

I do have the 965 chipset as stated in the Welcome Screen.

    Thanks all!!

Well, I got no luck installing 2x2GB RAM. After loading the BIOs splash screen the laptop shows the blue screen of death just as the Vista splash screen trys to load.

BIOs does however recognize 4GB of RAM. Right now I have just one of the 2GB stick and a 512MB.

So is there any fix? I tried to install this update but when I ran it, it said it "doesn't apply to my system".

    I wonder if the laptop can run 3GB RAM? (2GB + 1GB)

My computer now shows 2.49 gigs of ram!

After reading the posts on this thread, I have bought and installed a 2GB PC2-5300 SODIMM (667MHz) for $30 AR for my Vaio VGN NR110E that I got from the Black Friday sale. As you said guys, when I pulled one of the installed 512 RAMs, I noticed that it was PC5300 (not PC4200 as the Sony's marketing Specifications say).
Now my laptop has 2.49 GB.

    darn it!
I just ordered 2x1 1Gb today too after calling Sony and asked them about it :( .

Gah! 50 bucks on Ebay :(

    Hmm I guess I can't cancel it ...

So I'll try to sell it back or something, but anyone has any luck with 2 GB + 2GB or 2GB + 1gb yet?

If that's the case then I might want to keep my 1 GB.

    Or is 2.49 the highest?

You seriously got ripped off. I just sold a 2x 1gb kit to wabbaJ here for $15.
You should be able to buy two new 1gb memory cards for less than $25.

I would contact the seller, cause they just overpriced you.

The laptop is stated to have a max of 2gb, but newer bios revisions should have pushed teh memory capacity to 4gb, Usually the bios limits are either 2gb or 4gb, it is never 2.5 or 3Gb

Buy two of these to get 2gb of memory, they are $8.50 after rebate each:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227099

or get a single 2gb card, and use the 2gb card and one of the memory cards you are currently using, to get more than 2gb of memory.

Pc5300 and Pc5400 are backwards compatible with Pc4200.

Plus Samir stated that his is running at Pc5300, so it will run at Pc5300 speeds.

It seems that Sony made some mistakes on their laptop datasheet, so dont take the sony spec sheet to be right

That memory should work without any problem.
Kingston makes good memory cards, so it will work right out of the box.

I'm not a big hardware guy so i don't know anything .. my question is if I run the PC 5300 instead of the PC 4200, would it be better?

    And should I try for 2 x 2GB?

Well pc 5300 will run faster than pc4200 in benchmarks. You will not notice any speed difference in real life applications. The speed difference is negligable.

You can try for 2x 2gb but I am not so sure on how much memory your system actually supports. The other posters have stated they get 2.5Gb of memory running, so I dont see why it wont work with 4gb of memory, but you never know, sometimes certain machines are picky

I would stick with the 2 x 1gb you just purchased, since it will work without any problem. The 2x 2gb sounds like it is hit and miss, and I dont think the added memory is worth the extra aggrevation if it doesnt work.

    Hi

I have sony VGN-NR110E laptop which ahs 2GB max memory official each GB in each DIMM.

After reading this post,I installed 2GB(new) 1 DIMM and I left 512MB 1 DIMM as it is, now my laptop has 2.5 GB RAM but I dont see any improvement in performance.

I doubt that as motherboard has limitation of 1GB per DIMM allowed, my 2GB RAM is useless, I also read that another 512MB RAM downclock my 2GB RAM as my chipset does not support 2GB RAM in 1 DIMM.

Pls let me know, otherwise I have option to send it back to dealer on my expenses :(

    Thanks
    Ab

I believe the GL960 chipset can run 3 GB but not 4 GB. I'm only saying this because I've seen 2 other persons with this chipset, one was a Lenovo laptop and the other was an Acer, were able to get 2 + 1 to work, but failed to get 2 + 2 to work. And yes 4 GB was showing in their BIOS, but they couldn't get it to boot up properly, even with the latest Intel chipset driver. Anyway, you can still try 2 + 2, I'm just sharing what I've seen.

I have just purchased two 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 667Mhz RAM Value Ram sticks from Kingston. Planed on using both of them in my Vaio VGN-NR110e Lappy. Unfortunately I have only been able to get one 2GB stick working.

When there are two sticks in the lappy it won't even boot. I get the "BLUE screen of Death" with an error:

    PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
    STOP 0x0000004E

Some people have posted that this error means the Memory chip is BAD. In my case that is not true. Both chips were tested with Memtest86, AND the Vista memory checking tool, no errors. So the chips are good. If I run one 2GB at a time (no matter which RAM chip is it, or where it's placed Slot 1 or Slot 2) everything works perfectly.

I can get 2GB and the factory 512MB working too. Which gives me 2.5GB of RAM. My BIOS is updated to the latest version as of 01/31/2009, and it recognizes 4GB...

So it seems that maybe Windows Vista limits the amount of RAM?
If anyone has 4GB running on this particular laptop VGN-NR110e please post a solution.

Does anyone know if installing Ubuntu 8.10, or any other system WinXP, any linux distro, might solve the problem?

Maybe i'll try to get it going this weekend.

How can I overclock my RAM? is there a way to get more options in BIOS?
It seems like I only have the basic functions/options.

    Till next Time

Has any one tried to upgrade processor to P socket T7700 2.4 GHz and upgrade the memory to 2x2 gb DDR2 6400 800mhz? This combo should let the fsb run at 800 mhz. Right, as long as you are using a 64 bit OS?

As long as you are running a 64 bit OS it will see all 4GB of ram. The 32 bit OS can only see 3GB of memory. Also make sure your mobo is 965 chip set.
As stated by cluelessfool he used DDR2 5300 ram that can only run at 667 Mhz and he also used the procesor intel T7100 which does have the 800 FSB. The ram restricted his FSB to 667 Mhz instead of 800 Mhz.

I think the max upgrade for VGN-NR110E with mobo GM965 chip set is:
    Processor socket P Intell T7700

    The intel T7700 is 2.4 Ghz 800FSB, intel T7100 1.8 Ghz 800 FSB, intel T2310 1.4 Ghz 533 FSB

    Ram 2x2GB DDR2 PC2 6400

The 6400 ram is 800Mhz, the 5200 ram is 667Mhz, and the 4200 is 533Mhz.

    Hard Drive 500G 7200 rpm

This upgrade should turn the Sony VGN-NR110E into the Sony VAIO VGN-SZ691N/X.

If I am wrong please let me know.
