Hello. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ691N. I have had this laptop for 3 years and wanted to upgrade the processor.

    It has a Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 Merom 2.4GHz 4MB L2 Cache Socket P 35W Dual-Core Processor.

I picked one with Socket P so that it'd be compatible.

    Intel Core 2 Duo P8800 Penryn 2.66GHz 3MB L2 Cache Socket P 25W Dual-Core Mobile Processor

When I installed the new processor and booted it up, there is no initial beep and the screen stays blank. The power LED lights up and I hear the fan running. When I put back in the previous processor, it boots up perfectly fine.

I've checked for BIOS updates, and I have the most current according to sonystyle support.

What should I do? I am afraid to have wasted the money on a new processor.

You should have checked out your chipset and what it supports.

I think you have the PM965 chipset which supports CPUs that have a 533/667/800 MHz FSB.

The P8800 has a 1066mhz FSB. It is made for the newer PM45 express chipset.

You could upgrade to something like a T9500.

its not going to work with a PM965 chipset machine.. due to 800MHz FSB limitation.. try a T9300/T9500 instead..

P series processors are for the newer refresh of Merom, so I think you're limited to 800Mhz 35W TDP processors. Moral Hazard and Sean pretty much hit this.

    Yes, you did!

Socket compatibility does not mean CPU compatibility.

Thank you for your input everyone. I learned a lot from my mistake. Luckily I am able to return the processor.

On another note, what can I do to keep my laptop from overheating? I've opened and cleaned out the dust. It will overheat unless it's on my Zalman cooling pad.

    Is the fan OK?

If your ambient temp is around 15-18°C your Vaio should stay below 30°C when idling, ideally around 25-28°C.

    (That's from a T9300 processor)
