I can recommend the Hitachi 7K500 or the Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid. Both 500GB and both fast. The XT is definitely faster - approaching SSD speeds on your most frequently used programs - including booting up, shutting down and resuming from sleep.

There are higher capacity models out, but they all fall far short of the two drives listed above (when used as system drives).

For around $80 for the 7K500 or about $100 for the XT, you'll gain both capacity and at least the same speed as your current drive now. With the XT, you should definitely gain a noticeable performance difference too (depending on what HD you have now).

    Good luck.

I only recommend WD drives, so 500 GB Scorpio Blue if you are looking for cheap space (around 55-60 bucks right now) or the 500 GB Scorpio Black if you want something a little bit after (80+)

I'll second the Hitachi 7K500 recommendation; I have one in my HP laptop. It is quiet, fast, and reliable. I also have a WD Scorpio Black 500GB in another laptop . . . it's noticeably louder than the 7K500 and I don't notice any performance difference. If I had to buy again, I would buy another 7K500.

The 7K500 and the WD5000BEKT are the fastest purely mechanical drives on the market. The Seagate Momentus XT is a hybrid drive (built-in 4GB SSD that auto-caches your most frequently used things) and faster than both in everyday use (benchmarks do not accurately reflect the difference); naturally it is more expensive.

At any rate, money spent on a faster storage device is money well spent.

I'm leaning towards the Hitachi Travelstar. I'm just leery of newer technology in the Seagate Momentus XT.

Charles and tilleroftheearth: Is it the Hitachi Travelstar you recommended? It comes in 2 different packaging styles, one black one white!

All 3 below will fit my Sony Z690 HD bay?

If you can still get an xt from newegg for 90$ get that its worth it.

Even though hd tune shows its almost exactly like a wd black it boots faster.

is worth about 20$ more imo
