Hi, my 1 month old sony laptop battery completely failed tonight due to a faulty AC power adapter being plugged into my laptop, ive taken the battery out now but its producing its own heat after 2 hours of being removed, im worried its getting hotter.
The adapter is the genuine adapter that came with the laptop but it kept turning itself off as indicated on the led staus light on the adapter. Ive got sony replacing this under warranty as the problem occured yesterday. However as i needed to use the laptop i left the adapter plugged in while i went to work today in an attempt to recharge the battery a bit as the adapter decided it would work again. I came home to a completely dead battery! luckily the laptop still works straight off mains if the battery is removed, i tested this with the temperamental adapter breifly.
Sony is closed at moment for me but im worried about the battery being warm still.
Anyone know how this happened to the battery?

It shorted. I would stay away from it, there's two things that can happen now:
1. It runs out of juice and dies permanently.
2. Heat causes it to explode, spraying above juice, and the battery dies permanently. -
He's right. Lithium ion (or in this case Lithium Polymer) batteries have what's called a "runaway discharge" that happens when a) the battery is overcharged and gets too hot and shorts internally, or b) you get an old fashion short.
Either way, as it gets hotter it creates more and more charge, which in turn creates more and more heat, and away it goes...I work in aviation and most of your aircraft are using these batteries instead of the old lead acid batteries, and because of the high discharge/charge rates it causes a lot of heat and this can happen quite often. More than likely this is what was happening to the Dells as well (I believe they were using a Sony manufactured battery?).
Just get it outside where if it does disentegrate, burn or explode no one is hurt (and I might have a video camera handy just in case, lol. That might be a neat addition to the forum) -
ok ive put it in my empty garage on the concrete as its still maintaining its heat, actually feels a bit warmer. Not sure how it could have overcharged, thought they are protected from that happening! And im not sure how it could have shorted....could the faulty AC adapter have shorted it?
Im so frustrated at this happening to a brand new laptop. I just hope the faulty AC adapter hasnt caused any damage to the laptop itself.
thanks for your advice. -
BTW, which Sony laptop are you using? It's not a new SZ6, I hope...
...my new SZ680 will be in tomorrow and I'm dreading all of the things that can be wrong/will go wrong with it (Murphy's Law, anyone?). It's a 6 cell but I'm considering buying the extra 9 cell as well later on.
If it gets hotter and doesn't seem to stop you may want to let the fire department know about it (I wouldn't call 911 emergency - or whatever it is in the UK) just in case, so you don't lose more than a $200 battery. And have you spoke with Sony about this? -
yes ive informed sony this morning and given serial codes for both battery and adapter. The battery was out in the garage all last night and was still very warm this morning, will check it again when im home from work.
It is the FZ11S(UK model). was looking on youtube at exploding laptop batteries! scary to think these things are left in homes all day, even if it is a remote chance of blowing up.
Im returning the entire laptop to the store for a full refund as i dont want to risk having a troublesome laptop from now on with parts being replaced every month or so from shorted electrics! will let the store deal with the battery.
Will prob get another sony, just dont want this one. Hopefully its just a one-off problem and not a batch.
Sony laptop battery problem - urgent!
