Hi. Doe's anybody know if it's possible to upgrade the CPU on sony vaio fw21l series notebook. I've seen this:

    http://www.ciao.co.uk/Productinformation/Sony_VAIO_FW21L_Core_2_Duo_T5800_2_GHz_16_4_TFT__7031329

And on the processor section it say's:

    2.53 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo P8600

Only my vaio came with a 2 GHz CPU.

Doe's this indicate it's possible to upgrade the CPU?, i understand the problems with the power it'll draw from the battery if i choose to upgrade.

Cause i'm of upgrading the CPU to this one:

    YUM YUM :-D

i guess yours came with a t6400, as most of FWs do? Yepp, you can upgrade to pretty much anything from t8xxx and t9xxx range

Hi thanks alot for ure reply. mine came with the Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 / 2 GHz
CPU. If i can upgrade this then i'm happy cause the one i've got is built on the 60nm die, but the one i'm getting is built on the 45nm die so i'll and it also give off less heat. In theory then i should be getting more battery usage. Hopefully....

    welcome to the forum ;)
yeah, p8600 should work just fine. You might consider p8700 as well if you want a little bit more (2.53GHz) but still within the same TDP

u might want to consider a P8700 at least... P8600 won't be much of an upgrade... if u can , try getting a T9600.. it will be a super upgrade... and shouldn't cost that much.

correct me if im wrong but isnt the T5800 a chi which was arond with the older core 2 duo chipsets eg 965 chipset which dont suppost the newer 1066 mhz fsb processors. its odd that it doesnt have the far more common T6600

T5800 is a memron CPU but it has been used in PM45 chipset notebooks very often.. like Asus G50 and Hp pavilion Dv5t and Dv7t.. Somemore if u look at the Vaio page he's linked in first post , it looks like the notebook uses PM45 chipset meaning he can use P8600... or T9600 which is better.

The CPU you can upgrade to will depend solely on your chipset.

Core2Duos came in 2 flavors. The initial batch were made using 65nm nanometer processes and ran at 600 mhz fsb. These came out in 2007. These include all the T5xxx. If you have the older chipset, then the best CPU you can get is either a T9300 or a T9500 the latter is 100 mhz faster but much more expensive.

The second batch were manufactured using 45 nm processes and ran at 800 fsb. This includes some of the higher end T models and all P models. These came out in 2008

You can look up your chipset using an application called CPU-Z. Google for the download. If your chipset is PM965, you have the older chipset. If your chipset is PM45 you have the newer chipset.

Look at the link from the first post.. his laptop also came with 1066MHz FSB CPU's if his laptop was new enough as the one listed so 1066MHz FSB CPU"s will work since he would have PM45 chipset.. like i said , there's a high chance of it since T5800 has been used a lot in PM45 chipset notebooks as a cheap alternative.. now T6400 is used but then only 65mm alternative was T5800.

    hey guys,

    btw my first post :D

your discussion about upgrading cpus in vaios is very interesting! Me also wants to replace the cpu (CoreDuo T2300) in my Sony Vaio Fe28b (945PM chipset) to a newer Core2Duo (for using 64bit). I think, how i read, its possible then!

Are there any guides, maybe with pics, where you can see step by step how replacing cpus?
You have to upgrade the Bios or something? What about cooling?

    thx for answers :)

    €dit: guide found :)
