I don't care for USB ports near the front on the sides of laptops since they are more vulnerable when nearer the front. For this reason I prefer they be nearer the rear. Heck! I'd prefer that all ports were in the rear. That's just me.
But if I can find a computer that has one port nearer the rear could I buy what I'd call a splitter to add additional USB ports without seriously compromising performance?

USB 3.0 has enough bandwidth that it won't be a bottleneck while USB 3.1 / Thunderbolt is even faster. You can attach a hub to either in order to use more devices with that port but you may need a powered hub. There are also USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt docking stations which enable attachment of other devices (LAN, video ...) to the port.
