Is it ok to put a notebook that is on standby in a notebook sleeve and/or case?

No, don't do it. It strongly depends of the ambient temperature and the heat conductivity of the sleeve (very bad usually).

When in stanby, your laptop still dissipates a couple of watts, and if the ambient temperature is high your laptop can overheat very easily. It happened to me two times when I put my notebook by mistake to stanby instead of hibernation and closed it in the memory foam sleave for several hours. The overhating inside the sleeve actually killed the battery as the result.

Not inside a sleeve. For case it is fine if this is a fitted type that does not cover the vents.

    cheers ...

Hibernation takes so long, I'd much rather be able to use standby around campus since I will be moving around a lot.

Putting it in the sleeve for less than 1 hour is probably OK. Just be aware of the dangers of overheating, especially on hot days.
