    Hey guys,

I'm working on a fun little side project, and am currently designing the trackpad chassis that physically connects the the trackpad to the laptop.

My question: Is there an industry wide standard on how they connect? I've taken apart one of my old junker laptops, and it utilizes a simple 3 screw configuration.

    Thank y'all,
    Brogan

Hey Tiller, thanks for the response! Do you know if there are an array of standardized configurations (10-100ish), or if it is pretty much different for every laptop? Do certain manufacturers have standard configurations (the Toshibas, the Dells, etc)? Thanks so much!

Notebooks (and all handheld devices) are one of the most non-standard conforming devices ever invented. First; to encourage you to buy new. Second; they found a new way to shave 1/156th of a cent, etc.

I would be surprised if even within the same manufacturer and the same brand and the same line of notebook, the configuration didn't change over the course of the manufacturing run.

On the surface I'm sure it may seem like there are a few 'standards'. But when push comes to shove (as in; trying to get the $@$@# piece to fit), it may as well be a part from a washing machine (yeah; and they're the same too...).

Curious what others will report, but they can't even standardize a keyboard (even Lenovo lost their way for a while)... I can't see them going the extra mile to do so for the touchpad and cross company too.
