    Hello,

If i put my notebook into sleep can i put it in a bag and carry it around? Is the RAM the only thing that is still on power?

Also, are there any diffences between sleepmode, standby, hibernate?

    Cheers!

In standby, also known as suspend to RAM, the only components that remain powered are the RAMs and partially the motherboard.

In hibernate, also known as suspend to HDD, no components are powered, it's just like having it off. (you can even remove the battery, it won't effect anything).

Yes you can put it in a bag when in stanby. The RAM and partially powered motherboard don't produce significant heat to cause a heat build up, but your battery will be consumed at a slow rate (much slower than normal/on mode)

    Hey, thanks for the reply.

Then whats the difference between hiberate and a complete shut down?

Also, if the notebook is booted and running and then i carry it around (so its 'laying vertical' in the bag) what are the chances it gets damaged? Can you shake HDDs around if they are on power?

Hibernate is essentially no different from a shut down, just that before shutting down it saves all your settings (programs open, etc.) to the hard disk, so that when you turn it back on again it will resume Windows from the exact same point that you left it.

Also note that it will take much longer for a laptop to enter/exit hibernation mode than stand by mode (because of the time required to write everything to hard disk as opposed to RAM).

But it won't take much longer than a reboot though i guess. I can't test it at the moment.

    Cheers

Generally speaking, it's a bad idea to move a HDD while it's powered on. If it's powered off, you should be safe as long as you don't actually throw it at the ground.

If it's on standby, you can probably assume that the HDD is turned off, so it *should* be safe.

My boss keeps forgetting to plug in her laptop when she puts it into her case in sleep mode. It's killed the battery a number of times, which basically crashes the machine. Bad mojo. It also still generates heat in sleep mode, so sealing it inside a bag, especially for a longer period of time, can be a bad thing.
