Just got a new 100G 7200rpm Hitachi drive for my dv6119us and love the performance gain I got.. only thing I noticed is a light humming noise if I tilt the notebook to rapidly... it sounds harmonic... is this anythign to worry about?

yes. one day your hd will random blow up rendering your whole system useless. on a serious note, i'm curious about 7200 rpm drive's in notebook's myself. are they worth it, other than the obvious performance gain?

You lost me at "blow up"... mainly becuase I ran from my laptop... after returning to an unblown up notebook I have to say the performance increase is pretty noticeable to me. The benchmarks for this drive vs my old drive are below per Sisoft Sandra....

    80G 5400 Toshiba
    32 mb/s transfer
    11ms seek

    100G 7200 Hitachi
    42 mb/s transfer
    8ms seek

I didnt expect the Hitachi to have such an improved seek time... Its louder and puts off a little more heat from what i can tell. I kept the 80 and stuck it in an external enclosure which will be useful to me. I imagine the drive noise is normal??? I mean its spinning at 7200 rpm so I can only imagine it doestn like to be tilted to quickly???? If this thing blows up on me ill be pissed :)

from what i've read on these forums, the hitachi's are better/best performance wise, but noise and heat wise they get pushed to the middle of the pack.

I have the 80gb 7200rpm one and so far so good. No strange noise but it does heat up a little bit. I'm happy with it so far.

I have a Hitachi 100GB 7,200RPM drive in my notebook, and I have never had any issues with it. It is quiet (quietness is relative to the notebook) and fast. When I get back to my laptop (lent it to a family member for a couple of days), I'll tilt it and let you know what I hear. Based on what you said happens when you tilt yours, it's not good. I would call up your notebook maker or Hitachi and get that replaced under warranty.

I've owned plenty of Hitachi HD and never had any problems with their drives.

I'd imagine it's relatively normal. when the platters are spinning they are are kinda like a gyroscope - tilt quickly and the intertia will want to keep them in the orientation they were spinning in. It then loads the bearings unevenly putting wear on a less-used path. If you have a power drill or shaver try turning it on and moving it suddenly, you will likely hear a similar noise.

I think the best test is to drop the laptop on the ground and see if it still makes the noise.

I was thinking the same thing so I removed the drive and stuck it in an external enclosure I had... when I titled the drive I heard the noise plain as day.. its light but its there. I hooked my toshiba drive 5400rpm back into my external and did the same thing.... same noise only not as loud.. probably because its 5400rpm. I assume this is all normal now.

I also went in and turned on Acoustic management with a tool I got from Hitachi's site that really helped the seek noise ALOT.. its much quieter now and after I benchmarked it the performance is the exact same per Sisoft Sandra.. I thought it would slow it down some?
