I bought a 120GB WD Passport external hard drive. I love it. It's small, quiet, and has lots of extra storage.
However, I have read some concerns elsewhere on the web about the power requirements - that over time could fry your USB ports or the HDD itself. Is this true? Should I worry? Or is this just some paranoid techies?
For a laptop should I consider the dual USB port accessory to be safe?

I'm sorta worried about that, but thats because I stuck a 7200RPM HDD into the WD Passport enclosure.

well geez, yeah.
How do I know what my Vostro's USB ports are rated at power-wise? -
USB 2.0 Highspeed is about 5V (I believe), which should be fine for a 5400RPM HDD.
-
I read it is 5v 0.5A (500mA). But this review at X-Bit labs raises some questions.

lol, note thats talking about my former external now internal 250GB HDD and not the 120GB, only as a comparison. If you don't mind gonna link that to my on going Notebook HDD upgrade thread. I'm a bit worried about that whole power thing, but I trust WD they have not let me down yet. I don't trust myself with the sticking my 160GB 7200RPM HDD into the former 250GB WD Passport external enclosure. The 250GB now rests inside my notebook, I choose size over power.
Success with WD Passport External Hard Drives?
