I got a budget Gateway laptop from Bestbuy for $299. Its spec is:
    -GL960 chipset
    -T2310 Core Dual 1M Cache 533MHz FSB
    -1GB of DDR2 (upgradable up to 2GB)

I upgraded to the following with success:
    -T5450 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo 667FSB
    -3GB of DDR2

Clearly the spec said that it can only be upgrade to 2GB of RAM but 3GB works just fine. Based on Intel spec, chipset GL960 can support only Celeron cpu and FSB 533MHz but this chipset also works with Core 2 Duo with 667MHz FSB.

anyone got budget laptops lately from Bestbuy such as the following laptops. you can easily upgrade your RAM and CPU to the above
    -Compaq C714NR,
    -Toshiba A205-S5804
    -Gateway ML6720

I happen to have T5450 on hand and give it a try with a risk of messing up my laptop.

The T2310 and T5250 are almost identical in all speed tests....The T2310 is a C2D at 533/ 1 MB. Also the C700 series that I have has a soldered CPU to MB from the reports I read...is this true?

mikelets456: I have the same question as you, having just gotten a C709NR, which is a Celeron 530 sans SpeedStep, which is pretty regularly pegging at 55-60C.

I'd like to know before I void the warranty if it's soldered down and if the bios will handle dual core cpus or not.

Another question if it is socketed but doesn't turn out to post with a dual core/high end C2D is if someone could provide an image or link to the dual core C700 bios and see if reflashing will help (might have just been cheap and done the limiting in software rather than hardware.)

    Void warranty? - yes.
Soldered? - no, otherwise the upgrade wouldn't have happened.
Dual core? - yes, otherwise the CPU wouldn't work.
BIOS? - download latest from manufacturer, as there are basically no 'hacked' BIOS in existence.

Greg: Thanks but no, the CPU on the Presario C700s *ARE* soldered down, unlike the aforementioned Gateway. So mikelets456, you like I are either stuck with the 530 mounted in them, or get the fun of hunting down someone who can desolder them and either socket it or drop a replacement chip in.

I rescind my previous comments, the C700's are *NOT* in fact soldered down, the chip you see when you open the memory panel *IS* in fact the northbridge, sSpec code is SLASV. The CPU at least in mine is an SLA48, which is supposedly Stepping E1. I'm still trying to determine if it's a Socket P or Socket M motherboard.

Almost forgot... you have to *COMPLETELY* disassemble the laptop in order to gain access to the heatsink and cpu retainer, and I do mean *COMPLETELY*.
