    Hello All,

After not monitoring my notebook temperatures for some time, I found my Intel T7200 idling at 45+ degrees. Figuring the culprit to be some background programs, I reformatted and saw that a clean system would have the cpu idling ~26 degrees. I restored most of my programs/settings trying to find the specific cause of the higher temperature, but lost interest when no programs would bring about the issue.

I checked the temperature again recently and they are back at 45+. Even worse, reformatting doesn't bring it back down. I have also tried new arctic silver 5 in desperation but to no avail. Does this sound similar to anything anyone else has come across? Any suggestions?

45deg C is not high, my computer idles there all the time. 26C is about room temperature, something you would expect only at initial startup.

You should only worry if your laptop is idling at 80C, like my last laptop.

45C is not hot at all for a notebook CPU.

For a Merom chip, 45c is quite normal... actually thinking about it's a pretty good temp. I used to have a T7100 in one of my notebooks and I had to downclock it to get around that temperature. I wouldn't worry about it, if it goes beyond 55c in idle then I would call it a bit toasty but in this case you're fine.

I've come to realize through these comparisons that some computer idle warmer/cooler than others. It's really something the manufacturer could/should specify, but it would undoubtedly be within a range since it depends on the computer design as well as the operational environment--which shouldn't be neglected when tracking these changes. Either way, I'd say under 50c is definitely within the cooler range.

All depends on the situation and the notebook. My Z61t's both house a T7200 Core 2 Duo, and with a MX-3 repaste and blowing out the entire cooling system I get ~45C idle with 20C ambient with tpfancontrol setting the fan to the max speed, 7. Under load it'll hit 70's easily. Older Meroms just run hotter.
