Im experiencing several sudden shutdowns on my msi ex625, I know its an old and busted pc, but its what I use for games and windows learning.

Im wondering if anyone know a good tool that I could use to diagnose what the problem is.

Currently I discard the psu (thermaltake toughpower 95w), its working perfectly fine on other notebooks under load or not

There is no dust build up and temps are very under control, the repaste with icd 24 was less than a year ago, when I got a refurbed 4670m gddr3 for free

from the logs on win 2008 r2 there isnt much info to come by. They point to a sudden loss of power, so i think something is broken and I want to see how much and if its worth to fix it.

To add that it happens either under load or not, its very inconstant, I can be days without a single issue, then suddenly 3-7 in a row. Today it happened already 4 times, unfortunately I was in win 7 ultimate, so no worthy log to see, unless you guys now how to dig that

any help is appreciated, free coupons to the dark side are given at input, or links to google books for free excerpts of the selfish gene, choose wisely at your pleasure

PS: has anyone wondered why those starwars books are so badly written? my unborn and non fecunded child can write better than this

Before the shutdown occurs do you notice a blue screen? ... I am sure you would have already pointed this out but I just wanted to complement you on your excellent sense of humor! Have you ran any checks on your ram? Maybe for some ethereal reason windows is not reporting errors correctly.

yeah memtest86+ was done, no errors found, I done a full CHKDSK, and no there are no BSODs, it simply shuts down.

I was working on the translation of the awakening of the rebellion mod had 1/3 of it translated, all lost, sigh...

    and thanks for the compliment!

Then only other thing I can think of is a faulty temp. sensor on the MB. But how one can easily check this is "above my pay grade" (President OBama)

Are you still using the battery in the system and is it any good?

Even as a form of UPS?

If you are - you may want to see if the systems persist without it...

If you are not using the battery, you may want to see if a UPS helps (to rule out possible external black/brown outs).

Finally - are you using a cooling pad with this setup?

Are the drivers the 'recommended' as per MSI (Windows Update may have updated something without your knowledge).

Hope you can track it down soon.

    Good luck.

im using the battery, but I just did a test and it doesnt even hold a single drop of charge

im really thinking that the eletrical installation is the problem here, its an old building from the late 60s

probably the cheapest solution is to get an ups

thanks for all the input everyone!

well, its not an electrical problem from the building, the thing is I got a battery, and its working, however there is still some sudden shutdowns, which is specially frustrating given that im trying hard to play company of heroes and cant get past carentan, simply because the sudden shutdowns happen to often and sometimes my saves are erased in that, which is leading me to become quite proficient in the first missions

I just did a repaste and my temps dont get past 80c on the cpu and gpu, usually mid 70s

    so any ideas?

Least you forget Hedge funds and Investment Bankers are ranking billions so his pay grade pails in comparisons. Very bad analogy if you trying to tie this with Government shutdowns that takes two to tango or lack of backbone by other side to do a reality check and has nothing to do with computer shutdowns. Most likely due to hardware failures.
