    Hello.
I'm searching for a good replacement for my current HDD (WD3200BEVT-22ZCT0) that become very noisy.
Please suggest some good 2,5" 640GB HDD with price around 150$.

    Thanks!

    P.S.
    My notebook is Aspire 8930G-734G32Bi.

WD Scorpio Blue 640GB or even 750GB (9.5mm height). Both are less than $150 USD.

well there's a WD 640GB scorpio Blue i think.. also there's a seagate one.. see ebay and u'll find some.. but i wouldn't get those.. they're 5400rpm.. Why not consider 500GB Hitachi 7K500? U get nice performance and its quite quiet... although u get less space , it is a 7200rpm drive.

I read somewhere that WD6400BEVT begins to drop speed after 20 seconds of inactivity and it is not a good choice for system (primary) HDD. May be WD Scorpio Blue 750GB doesn't have such "feature"?
Also, is there any good alternative for WD Scorpio Blue? Or WD is one of the most reliable manufactures?
What do you think about Seagate's?

    Anyway, thanks for the help!

You can disable the power saving features (spin down). Almost all notebook drives are capable of this.

As noted you can change when the drive spins down; in Windows 7:
    -Control Panel (icon view)
    -Power Options
    -Change Plan Settings
    -Change advanced power settings
    -Expand Hard Disk
-Set "Turn off hard disk after" to 0 (never).
    -OK/Apply

The WD Scorpio Blue is the best-performing 640GB 5400RPM drive on the market. Seagate's 5400.6 is behind though not by too much. Samsung's SpinPoint M7 is an abysmal performer, avoid it at all costs.
WD's new Scorpio Blue 750GB does not have as good of performance as the 640GB. I would go for the 640GB unless you really need the extra space of the 750 (in which case I suggest getting an external drive).

FYI any 2.5" SATA/SATA II hard drive (9.5mm height) will work in your notebook.

the WD is better but really benchmarks have proved it to be not much better than my old toshiba 5400rpm which is 2-3 years old.. if u don't mind average ish performance and need more space get it.. if u don't really need that much space , i would consider 500GB Hitachi 7K500.. it would blow u away.. but if u really need extra space , get the WD.. its more reliable than the seagate.

As I see there are two variants: WD Scorpio Blue 640GB and Hitachi 500GB 7K500. Extra space is not too necessary. I already have 2 external HDD. Reliability is the determinant factor for me and if they both are equivalent reliable, maybe I'll choose Hitachi, because I already have Hitachi HDD in my second notebook and it is more quiet then my current WD HDD.

I noticed the same thing on my desktop which has a WD at 7200 rpm and quiethdd (freeware) took care of the noise problem, not completely but it does its job. I do expect the drive to fail any moment even tho I never had a WD drive ever fail on me and I backed up since it gets really loud on read/write specially. It sounds like it's running at 10000 rpm and the needles are running like crazy loud. There might be a program to check the wear/condition of the drive. They're not 100% accurate but they'll give you an idea. Sean... I agree, Toshiba drives are awesome when it comes to power consumption which really matters when it comes to battery life and they're quieter than WD Scorpio Blue which runs at 5400 also.

The Hitachi 7K500 and the WD640BG are not really "variants". The WD has a higher capacity - 140GB more (on paper). If you go by the original post asking for a 640GB HDD; the Hitachi wont be able to match that storage requirement and will be a compromise.

I've upgraded to a WD6400BEVT, and I haven't noticed any performance drops after inactivity, to be honest.
It did get a bit on the hot side when I was stuffing my data back onto the drive, but that's to be expected.

The Western Digital 640GB 2.5" SATA is a quiet, reliable and easy to install drive.

Do you really need 640GB? If not get the Hitachi 7K500.

I've got one here. Fast, quiet and power efficient. As far as I know it's still the fastest hard drive for single user notebook usage.
