My girlfriends laptop has just died (power connector) so I have just ordered her a new dell inspiron 1564. This comes with a glossy WXGA screen. The old laptop was an acer ferrari 4000, and had a much better screen, and it was matte. Theoretically I could swap them around. Does anyone have any practical knowledge of this and will it work? Im concerned about how the panels mount etc, but would there be any other gotyas?

I can't speak to the various hardware hookups. I will say you will be hard pressed to fit it in because the Inspirons and practically every notebook out there are 16:9 aspect ratio. The Ferrari like most everything from 2005 (besides a few business class 4:3 machines) is 16:10. That means the Ferrari screen might be too tall and not wide enough to fit in. Good luck

I hope her screen is brighter than the WSXGA+ in my 4005. Still I absolutely hate glossy screens... glasses wearer here

Your right the aspect ratio of the resolution is different. I'm not sure if this translates into a physical difference though. Time will tell i guess as the new lappy is due to arrive today. Ill sit it out for a week or so and see if she complains before I go diving in 8)
