    Anyone attempt this yet?

I will have my hands on my new 15" Envy 3xxx this week, and will be looking to swap out the optical drive for 128gb SSD, likely Samsung 830.

I have been told I can use velcro as opposed to a caddy, but I will likely spring for a caddy.

Are there any reasons that I should think this wont work? I will be using the installed 750gb HDD for my mass storage, and plan to run Windows and select applications off the SSD.

It is usally advised to put the SSD in the main drive bay.
Put the old HDD in the optical drive bay.
It is true you dont need a caddy, but you will probably need an adapter, SATA to slimline SATA as most optical drives are slimline sata

Probably alot easier just to get a caddy

Yea thats the route I would go, putting the SSD in the main drive bay.

I will be getting a caddy for sure, but I havent been able to pinpoint any documentation yet as to the optical drive being slimline SATA yet.

Take the drive out and have a look, it will be quite a bit smaller than the regular HDD SATA connector

I bought my caddy from a reseller of Sagers and did as stated above, ssd in hdd bay, hdd in caddy. It was made for my lappy and was very simple. Put in drive, screw in a couple of screws, put in ODD bay and then one more screw. Works well, even used the same bezel from the ODD so it looks like stock. Check out some of the resellers for your lappy, and you should be able to get one that will look like you did nothing to the unit. And you will like it, speed of the SSD and size of the hdd. Have fun and enjoy it.

You might want to go to the HP thread and see if there are any threads for your specific lappy and then if there are any about doing exactly this, or if there are reseller threads on there. A lot of helpful people that have done this, for sure. Again, good luck, you will enjoy it.
