Edit: Scroll down for update.
I just noticed that the battery in my laptop is swollen. It seems like it's about 1 mm thicker or so, and it works as usual.
My guess is that I should replace it, but I still want to ask here. I don't want it to break my laptop though, obviously.

Yes replace it as soon as possible. Dont charge it nor use it anymore before you have a disaster on your hands.
Swollen batteries normally means that your battery reach the end of its life, it could happen because of a manufacturer defect -
Yeah, it's time for a replacement I guess. Thank you!

Update March 2020:
So, my new battery got swollen as well after less than four months, and this time it also dropped in performance.
Sure, it may be a bad battery, but is there a chance that the laptop is causing it? I'm only using original chargers. -
If you have lost performance then there may be bad cells. allot of batteries are actually wired as say 3s but have p interconnects. if one of the cells goes bad on the parallel connection it plays havoc with the balancing charger. then the 2p of the leftover 3p cell set in the pack gets overcharged on voltage and you are heading to a failure and possible fire.

Is this in a gaming ultra book? Could be getting way too hot in the chassis and adversely affecting your battery

No, it's the laptop in my sig, a business model no fancy graphics, and I'm not pushing it hard either.
The first battery did get swollen after the laptop was being kept in direct sunshine indoors, so I'm probably the one to blame there. It never lost performance tho.
This time it happened with a < 4 months old battery during wintertime so no added heat. -
batteries when cold loose their abilities to easily provide higher amperage when cold. this is again per cell and with any failing cells causing overload to other cells. Again same issue. Now the first battery was just on its ways out but not have gotten there yet. be thankful too as falure can either be no further capacity or FIRE!

Yeah, I just meant that the last battery has only been used in normal room temps, I haven't been using it outside in the cold, and also never been left in the direct sunlight through the window (like the old one).

Are you sure? Old (bad) habits can be hard to break.

Well you never know, but the winter have rendered that option impossible..
