    Hello everyone,

I recently bought Synology DS412+ 4-bay NAS and 4x3tb WD Red drives. Apparently I didn't research the drives as I usually do, and now I have a disaster. Five hours after the SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid (Raid 5)) was set up, disk 1 failed. I have been reading a lot about this issue. I will RMA the failed HDD and try to replace with some other brand or other WD category HDD.

Has anyone encountered this problem with WD Red drives? and what would you guys suggest for a good reliable HDD for NAS?

    Thanks :)

I would just replace it with a new RED - use the warranty. Yeah, they are more failure prone and/or DOA... but still the best solution we have at the moment imo.

The only other option (not available yet?) is the new Seagate NAS drives. Although I have been wary of Seagate drives for a very long time now...

    Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I have initiated RMA process for the failed drive. I have also considered the Seagate NAS HDD (its available, but no reviews). I think the failure rate of these new WD Red HDD is too much. Some people have got lucky and had no problems.

Will see how the new drive goes :D
