i'm looking to customize a new sony SR laptop from the sonystyle.com site and i'm thinking about upgrading the processor from the T3400 to the T6400. The specs look pretty similar, other than a couple energy saving upgrades. One thing I did notice tho was that the T3400 is listed as a pentium processor while the T6400 is listed as a core 2 duo processor. Does this indicate a major upgrade, or is it just processor naming jargon?

Here's the links to both processors' specs. From experience or expertise, can anyone tell me which one they think is better?

    Thanks for any input!

How much is it going to cost you to upgrade to the T6400?

The T6400 is a good CPU, quite similar to the T8100 (which is a first-gen Penryn).

The T3400 is a Merom (an older generation). The T6400 will be faster for running CPU-intensive tasks due to better instruction sets, and more power-efficient.

The little SR's are gorgeous things IMO. We have a specced out one at work (electronics retailer) - Intel P8400, 4GB RAM, ATI HD3470 etc etc - really nice machine, just a bit expensive IMO.

For $50, no question about it, go for the T6400, no matter what you do. Even if you're only web-browsing (which doesn't need a good CPU ofcourse), it'll atleast hold the second hand value of the notebook better than with a t3400 CPU.
