I've found a good deal on a used T8300 processor on ebay and am considering replacing my T5670(1.8ghz/800/2mb).

I know theres alot of pros to switch over (+600mhz/45nm and whatnot), but would it really be worth the $175 to upgrade it?

I'm going to be doing a lot of programming and will be using alot of IT related programs in the very near future.

    I spent $200 going from a T5550 (1.83/667/65nm/2MB cache) to a T8300, and it was the best $200 I've spent in a long time.
You're in a different situation since you won't be upping the FSB speed too, but I think it'll make a decent impact.
Plus, might as well move up to the most advanced architecture for your socket/chipset.

    Honestly, I would look for a T9300.
Its a 2.5Ghz chip, and I have seen them go for pretty cheap.
This guy has one for sale, for just over $220:

or if you want a decent upgrade, you can try this:
    (T7500 2.2Ghz for $125)

Your probably best off getting the T7500 since it will perform better than the T8300, and come at a $50 less price from a very respected nbr member.

    Good luck with the upgrade

I'm sorry, on what planet will the T7500 perform better than the T8300? It's down 200 MHz and on an older architecture - things that 1MB of L2 cache can NOT make up.
If we're talking price vs. performance, then it's a more even keel.
Come on K-Tron, you should know this. ;)

Well, I guess we all can't be geniuses. I think unless your doing something CPU intensive I doubt it'll make a huge difference, even then the difference won't be all that big. If you're looking for a performance boost, a faster hard drive if you've not done so already, usually offers the best bang for the buck.

I currently have the T7500, its a great cpu. It can reach .850v SuperLFM idle.

Though im still looking to upgrade to a T8300 cause they undervolt better, run cooler and faster. The Penryn chips is a significant step up from the merom chips

$175 is a good price, make sure it is an Engineering sample chip.
