well, I checked some specs, and they are exactly the same
    T5670 1.8ghz, 2mb L2 cache, 800mhz fsb
    T7100 1.8ghz, 2mb L2 cache, 800mhz fsb
Why does intel make same procs and name them differently

Processors are far more complicated than that. Usually the latest give the best performance. Penyrn's are the best atm.

    EDIT: A little reading material :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE4

All merom chips support the same instruction sets, just read from the tables in wiki. It's the 45nm penryn chips which adds the SSE4 instruction sets.

    Does the T5670 support virtualization?

I don't even know what that does
guess I won't be utilizing that feature then.

    Any C2D supports virtualisation.

I'm pretty sure that t5670 is a 4meg t7 series cpu with half the cahe disabled (faulty). That's why you can't buy them on their own.

both of those processors have ONLY 2 MEGS of L2 Cache....

the main difference is that the T7100 is that it is newer technology and thus it should use a bit less power and generate less heat than the older T5xxx series...

    those are the major differences

    check www.intel.com for more details

WILLY S,,, thanks for the heads up...... it's been awhile since i looked at the NBR CPU GUIDE!!

I'm pretty sure the T7100 is a 65nm mermon processor. T8xxx and T9xxx are the 45nm penyrn processors.

T7100 would be a little faster than a T5000 range cpu with the same clock speed, and it'll generate less heat and improve a little on battery life.
I got one on my toshiba and it seems fine
really responsive for day to day tasks although my battery life is around 2 hours and 40 mins (i know, its crap, waiting for a 9 cell replacement)

    get the T7100, newer tech

So hey (i'm too lazy to look it up) how does the T7xxx consume less power and produce less heat than the T5xxx since they are both 65nm?

it is possible that the 5670 could be just the "oem" named version of the 7100 since the 7100 is not manufactured anymore. they do both in fact use the same 65nm, 2mb cache, and are both 1.8....if everything is the exact same spec wise they will perform identical. as i said my guess is that they just renamed the 7100 for oem channels.. but i could be wrong.

That's my guess as well. I think we just need to bench this CPU.

It could be. If you search in intel.com and support.intel.com there is not such thing as T5670.

I believe the only difference between the two is the T5670 does not have Virtualization.

I think the OEM only version of the discontinued T7100 seems like a viable explanation.

You may want to send a PM to tanxia, if he/she doesnt respond to this post.

The 5670 is a decent cpu, it isnt the best one, but it is a very powerful budget cpu.

OK, as I understand it, the T5670 and T7100 are for all intents and purposes IDENTICAL.
The difference is their application - I've only seen the T7100 in Santa Rosa-based notebooks (last-gen Centrino), while the T5670 has been seeing use in Montevina-based notebooks (current Centrino 2).
    Different chipsets, different CPU number.
The same could be said for the T5870 and the T7250 - identical.

    Uhm....Actually, no.

All Socket P T5xx0s --> No Intel VT.

So, if you need VT, you'll have to go for the P T7xx0s....

    So ..
    T5670; T5870 - No VT
    T7100; T7250 - Yes VT

    :)

Are similar but are not same:

    ark.intel.com/cpu.aspx?groupID=29759

    ark.intel.com/cpu.aspx?groupID=35163&code=T5670

seem that T7100 have some features that not have the T5670.

    Then I stand fully corrected.
I have yet to ever run into a situation where I needed VT anyway. ;)

    http://ark.intel.com/cpu.aspx?groupId=35163

    T5xxx --> no Virtualization

You only need virtualization if you run virtual machines like in VMware with specific guests OS. You get performance boosts in these types of usage. So mainstream users need not apply.
