IBM recon my T61 has a maximum system memory of 3gig (comes with 1x1gig)...

Is this true? Can i not just put 2x2gig in? or am i stuck with 1x1gig and 1x2gig to make up 3gig? (using Vista Ultimate 32bit btw....)

    Cheers
    Will

You can put 2x2GB, but depending on what else is going on, Windows will only see around 3 of those GB.

The T61 can accept up to 4GBs of 800Mhz RAM. If you are running a 32bit OS it will only recognize about 3.3-3.5GBs. Any 64bit OS will recognize the full amount installed. The limitation of 3Gbs was in the original intel chipsets but has since been overcome with the introduction of the Santa Rosa chipset.

As far as I know, the current Santa Rosa chipset only supports 800MHz RAM at 667MHz so any investment in the faster RAM is unlikely to give any benefit now.

3GB will be better than 2GB.

Hi John, thanks for the reply....

Im also toying with the idea of just spending another £80 and slapping 2x2gig... i know vista32 will only address like 3.2 of this, but ill get true dual channel with a matching pair then...

Thats what i did with my T60p, I added 4Gb and 3.24 recognized in XP 32bit. Dual channel capability... but it was a bit pricey i think i paid $240US altogether for the upgrade after having to sell/trade my 1Gb stick when it wouldn't do asynchronous, let alone recognize the second stick unless it was the same size. As for the 800Mhz vs 667Mhz thing, other than cost, availability and possibly a bios update later on it may make sense to just go with the 667Mhz ram for now and upgrade when all of the above conditions become viable.
