    Hi guys,

my T61 has 1gig already installed and 1 bank free.... would it be OK to stick a 2gig module in the spare bank and raise its memory from 1gig > 3gig?

Is having 3gig an OK ammount for Vista 32.... is it bad having 1x1 and 1x2 modules....

    Cheers
    Will

If you add a 2GB stick, it will not utilize the dual-channel capabilities.
You will see more performance gain if you have more ram, rather than 2x1GB dual-channeled.
    And no, its not bad.
Could suggest to upgrade to 2x2GB.

ahhh nice one mate, ill get another 2gig stick in a couple weeks and replace the 1gig it comes with effectively giving me 2x2gig :)

even tho 32bit vista wont see it hehe - its pretty much future proof!

The 2gig stick will work/ should work (That config did not work on my T60p) but it won't be in synchronous dual channel mode. I actually eventually ended up buying 2 2Gb sticks. But my chipset limits the memory seen to 3 gigs although i now get full dual channel synchronous mode. With the T61 if you eventually go to 64bit OS you will see the entire 4GB amount. The 32bit OS's will only give you about 3-3.5 max.

Ras - I tihnk im going to go with what u did and just slap in 4gig, altho its slightly wasteful under a 32bit environment, u are technically maxing out the memory windows can use as well as getting full dual channel

theres nothing to loose really is there.... apart from £70 lol

I concur fully the almighty $$ or in your case ££ does dictate what i can add and when. I won't mind acquiring a T61p but I only just got my T60p last December and it has so much life left in it yet. I really want to upgrade my processor to the T7600 but i refuse to pay the $700US it would cost me at the moment, that and i am waiting for my 1 year warranty to expire before i do that major surgery anyway.

ahhhh cool, well my T61 comes with a nice 2.0ghz duo with i think is pretty for the work.... i am assuming that when i put 4gig of ram into my T61, Vista 32 will boot as normal but it will just see 3.2gig (or what ever it is)....

Yup thats what i see. 3.2GBs. For me it was not so much a speed bump but more so a decrease in performance latencies ( i guess thats a speed bump) Everything seemed to run so much smoother and i had less lag times on just about everything.
