I have been looking all over the web, and have read conflicting reports on whether or not my T61p will be able to support PC2-6400 memory at 800Mhz speeds. I have the T7500 processor, and am running Vista 64-bit. What is it that won't support 800Mhz? Thank you!

The chipset you have is only able to support upto 667MHz speeds. 800MHz RAM will work, but only at 667MHz.

    Really? I thought GM965 could support 800MHz.

On an unrelated topic, is there any real-world benefit to using RAM with latency 4 instead of 5?

    Thank you very much.

The GM965 will support 667MHz max.
And there is no real-world benefit of using lower latency RAM.

Well, thank you very much. I guess I can get the cheap RAM that's on sale :) I still don't understand why I read so many conflicting reports of this - but then again, I'm out of my element here. Hardware confuses a software developer like myself.

    cpu-wise 800mhz but memory-wise 667mhz only.

memory with a 4ns latency is faster with the one with 5ns. though it doesn't matter for most applications and computer users.

get a ram with 800mhz, its latency will be lower when run at 667mhz. besides there's a big different in the price between PC5300 and PC6400.

You mean, there's *not* a big difference in price, right? So - PC6400 is a better bet for my T61p?

Yes, I am sure thats what he meant.
If you buy PC2-6400 CL=5, it'll be a better uprade for your laptop than PC2-5300 CL=5, considering that the price for the former is not too high.
