    T61p 200gb 7200 rpm with disk encryption.

    Average Latency - 4.2 ms
Average Seek Time - 11 ms
    Cache Size - 8 MB
Hard Drive Form Factor - SL
    Hard disk size (GB)[4] - 200 GB
Hard drive speed (RPM) - 7200
    Interface type - Serial ATA
Maximum Transfer Rate - 876 MBps
    Number of Platters - 2
    Size - 2.5 in
    Swappable - No

    T61p 250gb at 5400rpm.
    Interface: Serial ATA
Formatted capacity: Up to 250 GB
    Rotational speed: 5400 rpm
    Number of disks/drive: 2
    Number of heads: 4
    Interface transfer rate: 1.5 Gb/sec
Maximum media transfer rate: 665 Mbits/sec
Average read seek time: 11 ms
Average write seek time: 13 ms
    Latency (average): 5.5 ms

Anyone knows who the actual manufacturers for the above 2 drives are? and also, which one would be faster in the real world? I was really surprised to see the 200gb has only an 8mb cache cos i thought all 200gb at 7200 rpms had 16 mb... anyway, any help is appreciated!

OEM almost always use more than one component supplier so difficult to tell. If someone can tell what they received it is possible that all or most were of one brand no guarantee of tomorrow. I do not believe the Average Seek Time listed on either is real world. I suspect the 200GB will be slightly faster but the 250GB has more space. If I absolutely knew I would never use 200GB I would consider 7200. The real world difference is, short of a stop watch, not there in my opinion.

the 200GB 7200 RPM is not a seagate, or hitachi or fujitsu...all of these have 16 MB cache.... so it might be from SAMSUNG ...

    the 250 GB is a Hitachi travelstar 5K250 ..

If people are storing movies as well as using multiple OS, they would use 200 GB.

What about the performance of the new 320 Gb 5400 vs the 200 GB 7200 ... have you tested it ?

I agree with you on your points and as OP provided specs I would pick 250GB. But I do try sometimes to step back and offer different sides. And this was close. I pick storage over speed, even though not much diff here.

Onto 320GB, no I have not tested but have followed and read likely all threads regarding along with independent test results. The 320GB @5400 has a sustained read/write and transfer as good as any 7200 out now(people do not bring up stuff coming out in July, I am aware but as I said "out now") and with the larger storage capacity I do like. The 200GB does have shock sensor which I hold in little regard, but others might feel different.

On your previous post, I agree with your guesses as to who MFG's the drives. I considered looking up to determine what you did but decided not to. As not from memory why spend the time. I want to add to my original post. I bought a Gateway with a 160GB 4200. Well it is not, it is Hitachi 160GB 5400. Obviously they got a better supply. They are above minimum specs. So while you may be correct in your identification based on specs. It is no guarantee on what you will get. You cannot be for certain what components you will get. Good example DeLL screen issue, LG consumer's very happy Samsung not. ;) :)

    My wife's R61 100GB 7200 OEM is a Hitachi, my T61p came with a 80GB 5400 rpm OEM Western Digital (which I replaced with a 200 GB 7200.2 Seagate Momentus).

Aaaa, use either Everest of HDTune to find out the manufacturer,if you have the disk.
If not, the 200Gb is probably a Hitachi.
    The other one, beats me.

Oh yes.. you remind me of that issue. Many people are indeed dissapointed with the screen in some xps 1530 s. I was considering that, but the screen issues scare me..
