I'm looking at buying a computer for college and the HP website is giving me these options for processors. From looking on these forums and elsewhere I've figured out that the higher number means faster processing speed. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean much to me. Can anyone tell me what the difference actually is, and which of the options (T7300 and T7500 being $25 and $100 more than the T7100, respectively) is the best choice for me?

I;m a relatively newbie but I do know tht the T7300 should suffice for most people. You might want to splurge on the T7500 if you are a big time gamer or do a lot of multi-tasking which is when you will notice the extra power....eg I mainly surf the net on my laptop vs gaming or photoshopping and the T5200 processor is more than ample power....my lappy is VERY FAST so I would imagine even the T7100 should be fine although I read they are discontinuing that one so I would pay the $25 upgrade for the T7300 but again, for most people, the $125 upgrade is excessive....

The T7500 is clocked at 2.2GHz, the T7300 at 2GHz and the T7100 at 1.8GHz. If you don't intend to do any 3D modeling/rendering or heavily play taxing games at high resolutions and plan on word processing, internet surfing, light gaming etc... the T7100 is pretty much fine, although the T7300 being only $25 more is a pretty good deal since you get roughly a 13% increase in processing speed for that money.

I'd go for the T7300 because it has double the L2 cache of the T7200 (4MB vs. 2MB) and a faster clockspeed. The T7500 is a decent option (it's not a rip-off) if you have some cash to throw around but you're better off investing that money in a faster hard drive or more RAM.

If you can wait till September, the T7300 will be gone and you will be able to get the T7500 for the same price.

Where are you getting this information from? As far as I know Intel is only adding processors. The T7300 is one of their staple processors.

See this: http://sg.vr-zone.com/?i=5064 It shows the T7100 price as $209 now, and being replaced by the T7250 for the same price but with 2GHz, 2mb cache. The T7300 is $241 now and in September will be replaced by the T7500 at same price.

For those incremental price increases, the T7300 is definitely the best deal.
